Six Weeks In
GIM crossed six weeks with this group. Since the last update ("One Month In," two weeks ago), 120+ more changes have shipped — the headline is Garmin, which went from a closed test running on one account to full parity with Strava, open to everyone in this group. Here's what's new.
Garmin: from a closed test to full parity
Two weeks ago Garmin was a single-account experiment. Since then:
- Found and fixed a real cascade of bugs as it got exercised against real accounts: a persistent login block (Garmin's own anti-bot defenses, solved with browser fingerprinting and a residential proxy — the same block later reappeared on the background sync path too and got the same fix), activity times landing 5.5 hours off, sport types being misread, duplicate activities, lap numbering starting at the wrong number, and easy runs being misread as structured interval workouts.
- Opened to a second real athlete to validate it, then opened to everyone in this group — no allowlist, no waitlist. Settings → Connect Garmin.
- Closed the gap that mattered most: Garmin activities were quietly missing the route map, the continuous elevation/heart-rate chart, grade-adjusted pace, and the aerobic-decoupling training-load metric — all things Strava activities already had. All four now work identically regardless of source.
- Went further than Strava can: if your watch has an HRM-Pro-class chest strap, GIM now captures running power, ground contact time, ground contact balance, vertical oscillation, vertical ratio, and respiration rate — shown right on your activity page. Running power gets its own chart view now too.
Open invite: on Garmin or COROS? Come try GIM
If you know someone running with a Garmin or COROS watch who isn't in this group yet — point them to gainsinmotion.viara.tech/signup. GIM is in beta and free to use right now, and Garmin/COROS support is exactly where we've put the most work these past two weeks. They can sign up directly — I get notified the moment they do and approve it from there.
Strava: new connections closed, existing ones untouched
Strava's own API access for GIM is capped at 10 athletes, and that cap is basically used up — so new Strava connections are closed for now. If you're already connected, nothing changes for you. A couple of related changes:
- New connections are now managed through an admin-controlled list instead of a flat on/off switch, so specific people can still be added as it makes sense.
- Every new Strava connection now also requests write access by default, so GIM can push AI analysis back to your Strava activity without a separate step.
Sign up without an invite code
- Self-serve signup replaces the old invite-code-only flow — anyone can create an account now. New signups land in a pending state until I approve them and assign a coach, so it's still a controlled rollout, just without needing a code passed around by hand.
- Coaches can also send a direct email invite — the invitee clicks through and lands already set up.
Manage more of your own account
- Change your password right from Settings, no reset email needed.
- Edit your name, phone number, and profile photo without asking a coach.
Quietly-wrong bugs, found and fixed
- Closed a real gap where a database table had no access restriction on it — found and locked down; no evidence it was ever actually exploited.
- The team roster's "Last Activity" column was only checking one activity source — now considers all of them.
- The "still needs a workout today" flag was showing wrong for anything before a full 24 hours had actually passed.
- Recovery jogs were disappearing from interval analysis whenever their pace fell just outside the "Easy" zone.
- A phantom trailing lap (a GPS blip right at the finish) was inflating the splits table with a nonsense extra row.
- Disconnecting Strava was silently failing to actually revoke access on Strava's own side.
- Deleting your account wasn't revoking COROS access the way it already did for Strava.
Also in the last two weeks
- Clickable exercise cue cards for strength training days
- Profile photo upload with pinch/scroll/zoom cropping
- Rename an activity in GIM, with the new name syncing back to Strava too
- Import a .fit file directly, including a one-tap Android share straight from Garmin Connect's own share sheet
- Push to Strava and Share buttons redesigned as compact, properly-branded icon buttons
- A real Forgot Password flow
- COROS: HRV syncing, hardened against transient failures, a new Daily Data Push endpoint
- Workout splits now group into warmup/main/cooldown blocks instead of one flat list of kilometers
- Fixed the weekly/monthly recap share menu doing nothing but closing itself
- A long tail of fixes you'll never see, which is the point
Same as always: almost everything above started as feedback someone sent me directly. Keep it coming — and if you know someone on Garmin or COROS who'd want in, point them to the sign-up page above.
Thanks for sticking with this six weeks in.
